Art History’s Doctoral Candidate Alison Reilly Lectures on World War II Art & Culture

Published December 4, 2018

Doctoral candidate Alison Reilly presented “Art in the Service of America,” at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City on November 6, 2018, as part of the Intrepid’s Chancellor’s Day Professional Development Workshop. Reilly discussed the role of the Museum of Modern Art’s exhibitions during World War II and the ways in which art and culture contributed to the American war effort. Coordinated by Dr. Kurt Piehler, Director of the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience at Florida State University, and the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, this event offered a presentation on documents in World War II, an examination of oral histories, and a tour of the Intrepid’s collection.

Alison is a fellow at the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience, responsible for coordinating exhibitions utilizing the Institute’s collections. She is the project leader for the exhibition Love, Dolly: Letters Home in World War II, which will be on view March 14, 2019 at the Chipola College Center for the Arts in Marianna, Florida. Reilly is also organizing a traveling version of a show she designed in 2017, Artistic Expression Through Conflict: 1939-1945 (curated by Julianna Witt), which will open in 2019 at the Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center of Florida in Maitland.
