Arts Administration Faculty, Dr. Antonio Cuyler, Presents at International Conference

Published January 28, 2019

FSU faculty members stand with alumni. This past November, Arts Administration faculty, Dr. Antonio Cuyler, presented at The International Conference of Social Theory, Politics and the Arts in Manchester, England. The Social Theory, Politics and the Arts (STP&A) is an interdisciplinary gathering of researchers, policy-makers, practitioners, and students that explores key trends, practices, and policy issues affecting the arts around the world. STP&A is the oldest and one of the most influential academic gatherings of researchers and practitioners in the field of arts management and cultural policy.

Generally, conference participants are drawn from a broad range of disciplines including, but not limited to, political science, sociology, economics, law, arts management, arts education, art history, museum studies, cultural studies, education, and policy studies. The conference is affiliated with the Journal of Arts Management, Law, and Society (JAMLS) which has been the authoritative resource for the fields of arts management and cultural policy for more than 40 years.

There, Dr. Cuyler presented his paper titled, “Diversity, Cultural Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Statements in the U. S. Cultural Sector: Progress, or more Bullshit?” In regards to his work, Dr. Cuyler explains:

I presented a phenomenological study that explored two research questions: (1) what do service arts organizations’ DEI statements communicate about their positions on DEI, and (2) do service arts organizations hold themselves accountable for achieving DEI in the sector, if so how? In sum, the study’s primary aim was to assess if service arts organizations bullshitted in their DEI statements. Based on the data, this study found that the answer is complex. Some service arts organizations have made great strides in their DEI work, while others may engage in bullshitting until discourses about DEI are no longer in trend.

Additionally, FSU had a great showing as seen in the attached photo with faculty members Dr. Pat Villeneuve and Dr. Anthony Rhine in attendance with alumni Dr. Tony Daniels, Dr. Karen Munnelly, and Alex Hinand.

The department congratulates Dr. Cuyler for his work! More information regarding the work of arts administration faculty, students, and FSU’s master’s and PhD level arts administration programs can be found by clicking here.
