Graduate Programs

The College of Fine Arts at Florida State University offers graduate degree programs in Art, Art Education, Art History, Dance, Interior Architecture and Design, and Theatre. The College also houses the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Facility for Arts Research, and the Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography (MANCC). The Department of Art is one of the largest and most comprehensive departments in the College of Fine Arts. The Master of Fine Arts is an interdisciplinary program with a strong focus on research and practice with primary concern as contemporary art and the practice, history, and theories that inform it. The Department of Art offers outstanding, dedicated faculty and a rigorous curriculum with a three-year residency program. We are proud of the accomplishments of our esteemed faculty, who provide guidance in the skills necessary for not only artistic creation, but also in expressing contemporary issues through their visual arts.

The Department of Art Education is the oldest of its kind in the Southeast and offers online and face-to-face graduate degrees in the Art Education, Art Therapy, Arts Administration, and Museum Education and Visitor-Centered Curation (EC). With an over 90% placement rate, our alumni work nationally and internationally as K-12 educators, public and private clinicians, administrators in cultural organizations, and as museum educators. Guided by a mission of social justice, our department is committed to Art for Life: teaching, practicing and advocating for the arts as an instrument for societal change.

The Department of Art History offers students access to dynamic research opportunities, competitive national fellowships, and preeminent faculty working in state-of-the-art facilities. We provide in-depth scholarship in focussed areas, including Medieval, Renaissance/Baroque, Modern, and Visual Cultures of the Americas. Our Museum & Cultural Heritage program gives those seeking hands-on, professional experience the unique opportunity to take year-long internships at the world-class Ringling Museum of Art. All our graduate programs have an outstanding record of degrees awarded and alumni placed in higher-education and museum positions. Additionally, FSU has a scholarship program that allows graduate students from the Latin American and Caribbean regions to obtain in-state tuition rates.

The School of Dance is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Dance, offering work leading to the Bachelor of Fine Arts, the Master of Fine Arts, the Master of Arts in Dance (Studio and Related Studies), and the Master of Arts in Dance (American Dance Studies). Performance and choreography are the strong emphases of both the BFA and MFA programs with considerable theoretical coursework also required.

The Department of Interior Architecture & Design encompasses a CIDA accredited undergraduate curriculum and master’s studies for the Advanced Professional and Master of Fine Arts interior design student. Students focus on design theory, history, technical skills, as well as studio classes addressing residential and commercial spaces such as health care, retail, office environment, hospitality and designs for special populations such as children, elderly and others in need of supportive housing.  The curriculum prepares students to work as interior designers in design firms–as well as in a number of other design related settings.

The School of Theatre's graduate programs offer both a comprehensive learning degree coupled with direct hands-on, practical experiences that make them unique from many other programs. Graduate students have the opportunity to interact with the highly trained and experienced professional faculty and staff, as well as the opportunity to be leaders amongst their student peers. Many of the creative teams for the School of Theatre productions consist of graduate student designers, dramaturges, management, and directors.
