Maggie Allesee Receives Honorary Doctorate

Maggie Allesee and her family were in town for Fall Commencement when President Barron presented Ms. Allesee with an Honorary Doctorate from Florida State University. Ms. Allesee’s contributions to FSU are significant, but her most nationally recognized gift helped endow and name the Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography. MANCC and the School of Dance hosted an afternoon reception prior to commencement for Ms. Allesee and graduating seniors where Director Jennifer Calienes spoke of the effect that MANCC has had on artists, students and the wider dance community.

Ms. Allesee returns annually to FSU for Homecoming to cheer on her famed Seminoles. In the late 1940s, Ms. Allesee was head cheerleader for the first FSU cheerleading squad and earned the first varsity letter given to a woman by Florida State. Maggie Allesee is a 1949 FSU graduate in English, journalism and education, who now lives in Detroit. She received a master’s degree in education, guidance and counseling and a post master’s degree in gerontology from Wayne State University.
