The Florida State University Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training will be putting on a production of William Shakespeare’s As You Like It.
There are times when each of us needs to get away, sometimes from peril, sometimes from tedium, but every so often because until we get away from where we are, we can’t figure out who we are. Shakespeare’s As You Like It is the story of escaping into the woods in a celebration of self-discovery. The woods of As you Like It are magical, but it isn’t the rough magic of The Tempest or the mischievous magic of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Compared with the ambition-fueled dangers of the Court, the trials of the wild here are benevolent – “These are counselors, that feelingly persuade me what I am.”
Directed by FSU/Asolo Conservatory professor Jonathan Epstein, the production will create its own set of magical woods out of a thick stand of climbing-silks – the only set – where the actors can swing, hide, climb, woo, and reflect on who they are and whom they want to become. It’s particularly poignant that they embark on this play at the midpoint of their training at the Conservatory, and as each character discovers herself or himself, the actors also discover themselves as artists.
The casting for the show is as follows:
Other Likely Roles
|Joe||Adam, First Lord, Jaques De Boys|
|Kevin||Duke Frederick, Amiens||Martext/Willem|
