A Graduate Celebration
The Art History faculty and staff hosted a warm celebration on Thursday, April 25th to honor our students receiving their MA and PhD degrees this semester. We send our new colleagues off with pride in their accomplishments and best wishes for their future plans. To name just a few of our completed and continuing graduate students’ academic and professional plans for the upcoming year:
Sarah Buck will conduct research in Paris and London during the Fall 2013 semester on the department’s Penelope Mason Dissertation Research Travel Grant.
Alex Challenger will rejoin the department in the fall as a first year PhD student in Art History.
Sam Ewing will join Harvard’s Department of the History of Art and Architecture as a first year PhD student in the fall, where he will continue his work on Cold War era photography and the discourse of avant-gardism. Sam has also been invited to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City this summer to attend a scholars’ day dedicated to the work of Robert Heinecken, the subject of Sam’s recently completed master’s thesis.
Brad Hostetler will be attending the Gennadius Library Medieval Greek Summer Session in Athens, Greece this July.
Kimberly Jones will attend Texas Tech in the fall for a PhD in Fine Arts, an interdisciplinary program. The focus of Kimberly’s studies will be in Modern Art History and Museum Studies.
Natalie Mandziuk will be attending the 2013 Denver University Summer Publishing Institute beginning in July, to begin a career in academic publishing. Natalie’s goal is to work at an academic or university press, scholarly journal, or museum publications department in either editing, acquisitions, or production.
Jennifer Pride has been awarded the 2013 Kress Fellowship in European Art History, which will support her participation in the Intensive Immersion Summer Program in French at Middlebury College Language Schools in Poitiers, France.
Bryan Schaeffer will participate for his 3rd summer in the Yucatec Maya language program hosted by the UNC-Duke Latin American Consortium. Assisted by a FLAS fellowship from the U.S. Department of Education, Bryan will conduct ongoing fieldwork, collecting stories from local Maya in their own language.
Liz Spraggins will be in Tallahassee this summer, continuing her work on the Carter Collection of Peruvian ceramics and textiles exhibition at the FSU Museum of Fine Arts, which opens August 26, 2013. In the fall, Liz will return as first year PhD student in Art History.
Michelle Sunset will be interning at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Miami in their archives and collections care departments.
Lesley Wolff will rejoin the Art History program in the fall as a first year PhD student. Lesley has been awarded the prestigious Fellows Society Adelaide Wilson Fellowship by The Graduate School, which provides support for up to 5 continuous years for newly-admitted Ph.D.students.
