Art + Language is a content-rich all-media advanced studio course that explores the interplay between language and visual art. Readings and lectures on text-based visual art surveys conceptualism to present day, with an emphasis on institutional critique. Students focus on independent research in a student-driven, semester-long studio project. Additionally, students experiment with alternative forms of re-presentation to extend their studio projects or to operate as their conceptual counterpoints. Questions regarding form, concept, context and audience are brought forward.
This course follows an exhibition titled “Art + Language,” featuring work from both MFA and BFA students. The show includes a wide array of work including video, installation, drawing and sound. Art + Language will have an opening reception on Thursday, January 22 and will exhibit until Feb 22 at the Phyllis Straus Gallery.
