AXIS Dance Company to appear on FOXs So You Think You Can Dance

Published June 30, 2011

Dancers Sonshere Giles and Rodney Bell will perform an excerpt of choreographer Alex Ketleys Isadora Duncan’s Award winning duet To Color Me Different, which was developed in part during a residency at the Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography (MANCC) at Florida State University.

In April 2007, MANCC brought AXIS Dance Company, one of the worlds most acclaimed and innovative ensembles of performers with and without disabilities, to FSU to work with four choreographers, Isabel Croxatto (Chile), Shinichi Iova-Koga (CA), Alex Ketley (CA) and Kate Weare (NY). The primary goal of the residency was to provide an opportunity for AXIS to formally explore the best ways to orient new choreographers to the company. The residency led to numerous tangible outcomes including commissions, premieres and subsequent U.S. tours. AXIS was also included in the 2008 Seven Days of Opening Nights festival. During the residency, Ketley began the duet To Color Me Different with Rodney Bell and Sonshere Giles which would later win an Isadora Ducan Award and was considered one of the top ten performances of the year by both Voice of Dance and the San Francisco Chronicle. Ketley has taught at the FSU School of Dance and returned to MANCC as a Choreographic Fellow in 2009.
