College of Fine Arts Announces Leadership Updates in the Departments of Art and Art Education

Published August 7, 2020

The College of Fine Arts is pleased to announce the appointment of new Chairs to lead the Departments of Art and Art Education, both effective August 7, 2020.

Garcia-Roig Appointed Chair of FSU Department of Art

Lilian Garcia-Roig has been appointed Chair of the Department of Art. The College and Department extend thanks to Professor Stephanie James, who has served as Chair since 2018.

Lilian Garcia-Roig has been a Professor in the FSU Department of Art since 2001. She has served as Director of Graduate Studies in Studio Art (2002-2008), Painting and Drawing Area Head, and on various department, college, and university committees. In addition, she is the founder and Director of Art on Campus.

Not only is Professor Lilian Garcia-Roig a highly accomplished artist and a long-time faculty member in the FSU Department of Art, she is an experienced administrator, having chaired previously and been a faculty member at other major institutions. She brings significant outside professional experience and a sense of institutional memory from which we are sure to benefit. Lilian is a tenacious advocate on behalf of the Art Department and a welcomed addition to the College of Fine Arts leadership team.

Scott Shields Appointed Chair of FSU Department of Art Education

Sara Scott-Shields, PhD has been appointed Chair of the Department of Art Education. The College and Department extend thanks to Dr. Antonio Cuyler and Dr. Jeff Broome, who have served as Interim Chairs since Dr. Dave Gussak stepped down in 2018.

Sara Scott Shields, Ph.D. currently serves as director of FSU’s Masters in Art Education with Teacher Certification program.  Dr. Scott Shields joined the art education faculty in the fall of 2014 and has infused new topics and approaches – such as arts-based research and technological innovations – into familiar coursework. She received her BFA in Ceramics and Art Education and her MaED in Art Education from East Carolina University, later receiving her PhD in Art Education from The University of Georgia after teaching high school art for six years.

We are fortunate to have Sara Scott Shields, PhD joining the leadership team of the College of Fine Arts, as Chair of the Department of Art Education and the collection of programs housed therein. Dr. Shields is a tenured Associate Professor of Art Education, well-established in the field and wonderfully suited to taken on the role of lead administrator for the department. I welcome Sara aboard and I am enthusiastic about the leadership and direction she will bring.
