University Awards CVATD Faculty Members

The College of Visual Arts, Theatre and Dance wishes to congratulate two faculty members for their recent achievement, the University Teaching Award.

University Teaching Awards

The University Teaching Awards program recognizes faculty for excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching. Recipients must be outstanding in the many aspects of teaching which contribute to successful teaching and learning. This is a student-oriented award with nominations submitted by students and alumni. Each recipient receives a $2000 award. Contact the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs for additional information.

Jen-Atkins_mediumJennifer Atkins, School of Dance

Jennifer Atkins earned her M.A. in American Dance Studies from FSU in 2003 and also completed a Ph.D. in History, with an emphasis on how dance intersects with American women’s history. Jennifer’s dissertation, “Setting the Stage: Dance and Gender in Old-Line New Orleans Carnival Balls, 1870-1920,” addresses the relationship between American gender ideals of the late nineteenth century and the distinct culture of New Orleans’ elite Mardi Gras rituals. This interaction of tradition and courtship is revealed through a study of the dancing, socially choreographed body. Jennifer teaches courses in dance history, research, theory, and tap technique. Her work has been presented at CORD and Popular Culture/American Culture Association conferences and, in addition to her interest in New Orleans dance, Jennifer also researches Progressive Era dance halls and hippies.

Tom-Welsh_mediumThomas Welsh, School of Dance 

Associate Professor, teaches Dance Conditioning, Kinesiology, and Teaching Methods for Dance majors and Introduction to Dance for students with other majors. He is certified to train dancers to use the Pilates Reformer as a supplemental dance training tool. He also advises Dance majors on injury prevention and recovery.
Tom holds a doctorate in psychology from the University of Kansas and a masters in dance education and kinesiology from the University of Utah. In addition to teaching, he conducts research on strategies for keeping dancers healthy while performing at their peak. He publishes his work in a variety of professional journals.

Tom has performed in dance productions at the University of Utah, the University of Kansas, Western Michigan University, as well as FSU. During summers he teaches dance conditioning, injury prevention, and Reformer training techniques at summer dance workshops in various locations across the United States.
