Designing for the Human Experience

Interior Design student lighting and furniture designs are currently being featured in the William Johnston Gallery on the Florida State University campus. The show, titled Designing for the Human Experience, focuses on designs that directly impact the human daily lived experiences. An important component in the developmental process is that students created multiple iterations of their designs using both two-dimensional and three-dimensional thinking and problem solving. The goal is to work out design challenges early in the prototype stage so final designs are stronger. The student work was completed in Dr. Jill Pable’s lighting class and Dr. Marlo Ransdell’s furniture design class. The lighting pieces are all designed using LED lamps for energy efficiency. The furniture pieces were cut using the laser printer at the department’s Studio D: Design and Digital Fabrication Lab at the Carnaghi Arts Building. The show will remain up through August. The gallery is open Monday-Friday from 8:00-4:00.

Department Of Interior Design
The Interior Design Program, housed in the College of Visual Arts, Theatre and Dance, encompasses a CIDA accredited undergraduate curriculum and master’s studies for the First Professional, Advanced Professional and Master of Fine Arts student. Students focus on design theory, history and technical skills as well as studio classes addressing residential and commercial spaces such as health care, retail, office environment, hospitality and designs for special populations such as children, elderly and others in need of supportive housing. The curriculum prepares students to work in interior design firms or as interior designers in architecture firms–as well as in a number of other design-related settings.
