Event Details

Visiting Artist Robert Lawrence will be giving a lecture on Thursday, November 19, 2015, from 7-8pm in the Fine Arts Building.

From USF Arts website:

Robert Lawrence approaches film and electronic art as social sculpture and is interested in the ways that digital technologies can reformulate formerly restrictive rolls of media producer and consumer. All his work is developed in two complementary streams: in the physical world, and in the virtual world. Through this hybrid practice he engages ways contemporary life is lived, and identity is continually reconstructed, through our contradictory self-narratives in the embodied and virtual realms.

In 2012 he chaired the first CAA Annual Conference Panel on hybrid art combining physical and Internet elements. His groundbreaking 2004-8 open source film/performance Un Message screened worldwide. Current projects include Horizon, which will feature live streaming video from 40 performances worldwide directly engaging horizon lines. Horizon had a 2013 workshop premiere at LPW in Rome. Lawrence’s work has been awarded over 30 other grants, including a previous Fulbright and support from the Jerome, McKnight and Rockefeller Foundations. He received his MFA at the University of California at San Diego and BA in Humanities (Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa) at the University of California at Berkeley.
