Faculty members Judy Rushin, Julietta Cheung, Jeff Beekman, Kevin Curry, and Holly Hanessian recently accompanied 20 students from the FSU Department of Art to Art Basel Miami Beach. Everyone had a fantastic time and saw tons of art at the many fairs on the beach and in the Wynwood art district. The diversity and variety of artists and exhibitions challenges attendees to examine and analyze art from various angles. Art Basel is always innovating, thus expanding its platform for new artists who represent the vanguard of the visual arts. Its worldwide reputation for showing work of the highest merit, and attracting the world’s leading gallerists and collectors has made Art Basel the place where the art world meets.
Before departing on Sunday the group visited the beautiful new Perez Art Museum and also the Margulies Collection where senior curator Katherine Hinds spoke eloquently and genuinely to the students about living the art life. In addition to the students, Lilian Garcia-Roig, Mark Messersmith, and Carrie Ann Baade exhibited works at three different venues in the Wynwood District. This is a wonderful opportunity for FSU Department of Art students to see great art, learn more about the global professional art scene, and enjoy the sun, food, and fun of Miami for a few days during the cold month of December.
