Alumnus Brad Hostetler Receives Met Fellowship

A few weeks before defending his dissertation in Art History at FSU this spring, Brad Hostetler was awarded a prestigious fellowship at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.  As the Jane and Morgan Whitney Fellow for 2016-17, Brad is conducting research for his book project on Middle Byzantine relics and reliquaries and conducting research on inscribed Byzantine objects in the Met’s collections in preparation for an upcoming exhibition. He is part of a cohort of 60 postdoctoral fellows, who offer tours, gallery talks, and lectures to the public.

Brad’s professional experiences in New York cap off a stellar academic year, in which he also received the Florida State University  Graduate Student Research and Creativity Award in the humanities and the arts, and the Graduate Academic Leadership Award for the College of Fine Arts.He attributes his successes to the generous mentorship of the Art History faculty:

I am so fortunate to have been trained by FSU’s top-notch faculty. Their investment in me as a student, and the research and teaching opportunities that they provided, have shaped me into the scholar I am today. One of the most formative experiences I had as a graduate student in the Art History program was my participation in hands-on archaeological research in central Turkey for four seasons. Not only did I learn about the methods and unexpected challenges of fieldwork, I also became part of a community of international scholars. With their own extensive publication records as well as their direct guidance, the professors I worked with at FSU showed me how to be a scholar. They will certainly serve as my models when I have students of my own.
