Interior Design Professor Awarded Leibrock Fellowship

Florida State University’s Department of Interior Architecture + Design Professor and Chair, Lisa Waxman, has been awarded the Leibrock Universal Design Fellowship. Each year eight fellows, all interior design educators, are chosen to study universal design during a week-long workshop in Colorado.
Universal Design focuses on meeting the design needs of people in all phases of life and those with a variety of different physical and mental abilities. The goal is to make design accessible, user-friendly, and aesthetically pleasing at the same time.
As part of the fellowship, fellows attend the workshop at Green Mountain Ranch in Livermore, Colorado, each presenting on their area of expertise and sharing ideas for educating young designers on the value of universal design. Waxman spent the second week of August at the Ranch and presented on the design needs of veterans recovering from war-related injuries. The fellowships are funded by Cynthia Leibrock, speaker and author of numerous books on universal design.
About Lisa Waxman
Dr. Waxman holds a Ph.D in Art Education from Florida State University and an M.S. in Interior Design from Oregon State. She serves as the department chair and has taught in several different areas, including Environment and Behavior, Sustainability, and Computer-aided Design. Waxman has also served as president of the Interior Design Educators Council and continues to research design. In addition, Waxman is an IDEC Fellow, an NCIDQ Certificate holder, and is the author of numerous academic works on design.
