Liz Lerman, MANCC Living Legacy Artist, Collaborates with Student Veterans
Florida State University College of Fine Arts welcomes Liz Lerman, Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography (MANCC) Living Legacy Artist.

MacArthur fellow and Living Legacy Artist Liz Lerman returns to MANCC to develop Healing Wars, a work that examines how we heal ourselves, individually and collectively, during and after war. Lerman’s piece touches American conflicts from the Civil War to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and asks how we absorb the impact and aftermath of war.

To help inform “Healing Wars,” Lerman met with Chad Zeng, an assistant professor in the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering who leads a team that has been awarded $4 million by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to advance the functionality of prosthetic limbs.
Lerman also spoke with Col. Billy Francis, director of FSU’s Veteran Center, about the needs of veterans as they return to civilian life as students; Kristine C. Harper, an associate professor in FSU’s History Department and a retired Naval Commander, about her experiences as a female commissioned officer; and FSU student-veteran Heather Barta, among several others.

Living Legacy Artist Liz Lerman will continue to develop Healing Wars, while on residency at MANCC from May 4 – 13, 2014. A public informal showing will be held on Monday, May 12, 2014 at 12:30, in Montgomery Hall.
