Mary Brown Ostlund Scholarship (F07961)

Published February 24, 2015

In remembrance of Mary Brown Ostlund, the Ostlund family established an endowment in 2014 to provide assistance to a student of art at Florida State University. The first recipient will be announced on March 31, 2015 at the College Award Celebration.

Mary Brown Ostlund (1920 – 2013) was a well-known artist working in pastels, pen, colored pencils, oil and acrylics and her art was displayed throughout the eastern part of the United States. A member of the American Pastel Society, Mary studied under, and with fellow artists such as Albert Handell and Frank Jennings and actively taught art throughout her adult life in Coral Gables, Longboat Key, and Bradenton, Florida. Mary is known for her landscapes of Florida (South Florida in particular) and her portraits.

Mary was born in Savannah, Georgia. After moving to Atlanta (GA), Melbourne (FL), and West Palm Beach (FL), Mary’s family settled in Homestead, Florida during her senior year of high school – Mary received diplomas from both West Palm Beach and Homestead High Schools.

In 1942, Mary graduated from the Florida State College for Women in 1941 with a degree in art and languages. While at Florida State, she earned varsity letters in basketball and volleyball and was elected President of Landis Hall.

After graduation from Florida State, Mary married Grant Ostlund. After World War II the couple settled in Miami where Grant continued in his father’s profession as a builder and general contractor. Both Mary and Grant were active volunteers at their five children’s schools and in their many after school activities (dance, band, cheerleading, sports, service and leadership clubs, Girl & Boy Scouts) and in the Miami community including the Coconut Grove Playhouse, Miami Opera, and Episcopal Church.

Mary was an artist, a wonderful parent, a proud Floridian, and, of course, an FSU Seminole.
