Join us in the William Johnston Building Gallery Thursday afternoon, November 10, for the opening of Guardians of Their Art: The Contemporary Peruvian Amazon, an exhibition developed by Art History undergraduates in the Museum Object class. Curated from a collection of Peruvian embroideries, paintings, prints, and photographs, Guardians of Their Art will introduce contemporary art about and from the Amazon to the local audience. Exhibiting the works of Lastenia Canayo, Gerardo Petsaín, Roldán Pinedo, Brus Rubio, Christian Bendayán, and Adrián Portugal, the class seeks to show the diversity of the artists and their responses to the urban and natural landscapes of the Amazonian region. The exhibition opens Thursday, November 10 at 5 pm and will be open weekdays through December 9 (specific times below).
Each semester, the Museum Object class provides Art History undergraduates the unique opportunity to develop an art exhibition from start to finish – curating, fundraising, research, exhibition design and installation, promotion, and management. The WJB Gallery, an 1100-square-foot College of Fine Arts exhibition space at the core of the William Johnston Building, provides an ideal venue for the development of these small exhibitions, serving as both a teaching space for future museum professionals and a highly visible showcase for the students’ work.
Museum Object is taught each fall and spring by an Art History PhD student with a background in museum and cultural heritage studies. This semester’s class consists of: Delaney Ahrens, Stephanie Antonijuan, Caroline Bowers, Madison Bryant, Anthony Butera, Coral Dixon, Kathryn Kane, Flynn Larson, Alana Miner, Daniel Noel, Gabriella Roman, Marguerite Smith, Erica Trotman, and Julianna Witt, and instructor Gabriela Germaná. The assistance of other FSU faculty and staff and the availability of local and university collections are vital to the success of the class. Museum Object installations are also guided by Wayne Vonada, Senior Preparator at the Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts.
