Nominations Due: President’s Undergrad Humanitarian of the Year Award

Published January 5, 2015

The President’s Undergraduate Humanitarian of the Year Award is a prestigious award that recognizes students who exhibit tremendous commitment to service. Each school or college selects one student to be the Humanitarian of the Year. Students are then recognized at an awards luncheon hosted by FSU President Thrasher. Students also receive $200 that is donated in their name to the nonprofit agency of their choice. Finally, the student who best exemplifies a commitment to service is named the President’s Undergraduate Humanitarian of the Year, and an additional $1,000 is given as a donation to the nonprofit agency of his or her choice.

Currently enrolled undergraduate students who have made an outstanding contribution through public service during the last twelve months are eligible for the award. Candidates should meet the following criteria:

  • Service in any field such as aid to the hungry, homeless, or sick; protection of the environment; work for the elimination of prejudice and injustice; or efforts to help resolve community or national conflict.
  • Evidence of ability and initiative to translate ideals into practical results, such as the development of an innovative approach to address a social, governmental or legal problem.

Although outstanding service of any kind will qualify, nominees who have connected service with academic study, designed structures for the long-term support for the project, or linked service with the larger social context of the need through policy work, awareness-raising, etc. will be given special consideration. It is recommended that you have nominations turned into your office by Friday, January 23, 2015, in order for each college to make a selection and forward the winner to the Center for Leadership & Social Change by Friday, February 13, 2015.
