formLab

This past week, the Facility for Arts Research welcomed Netia McCray into our formLab facilities to utilize the Epilog Laser Cutter. McCray is a Massachusetts Institute for Technology engineering student and founder of Mbadika, a MIT Social Entrepreneurship Venture. Mbadika is an organization interested in developing and applying ideas that solve the overwhelming range of problems facing the world today. Her latest project involved teaching how to launch a hardware startup to middle and high school students in which the students developed their own open-source DIY hardware/electronics kits for “aspiring young innovators and entrepreneurs in emerging markets such as Latin America and the Sub-Saharan Africa.” During her visit to FAR, she utilized the Epilog Laser Cutter to create a boxed enclosure for these kits in addition to soldering some kits together.

Small Craft Advisory Press

Small Craft Advisory Press hosted a workshop on November 1 and 2 through the Southeast Guild of Book Workers. Sarah McDermott who owns and operates The Kidney Press, instructed several students during the workshop, Small Structures, Printed Layers. The students created several printed pieces using pressure-printing techniques, followed by the creation of various types of small book structures. An artist talk by McDermott took place on the first evening of the workshop, during the closing reception of Quarto: Four Years of Artists’ Books by Resident Artists at the Small Craft Advisory Press.
