Roald Nasgaard appointed Officer of the Order of Canada

Roald Nasgaard, Emeritus Professor of Art History and former chair of the Department of Art at Florida State University, has been appointed Officer of the Order of Canada by His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada. Professor Nasgaard received the distinction, which ranks among the country’s highest civilian honors, for “promoting contemporary Canadian art to Canadian and international audiences, notably as chief curator of the Art Gallery of Ontario and as the author of Abstract Painting in Canada.” The Order of Canada was established in 1967, during Canada’s centennial year, to recognize a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to community and service to the nation. Over the last forty-five years, more than five thousand distinguished individuals from all sectors of society have been invested into the Order. The 2012 recipients will be invited to accept their insignia at a ceremony to be held at a later date.

“My most recent project, the exhibition, The Plasticiens and Beyond: Montreal 1955-1970, opens at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec in Quebec City on Feb. 6, 2013. It will be accompanied by a book/catalogue in both French and English editions. The exhibition is a sequel/chapter 2 to my The Automatiste Revolution: Montreal 1942-1960, which is still traveling.”
