Stephanie Leitch presents at Cultural History of Cartography Symposium

Associate Professor Stephanie Leitch gave the talk “Vespucci’s Triangle and the Geometry of Difference” at the Cultural History of Cartography symposium at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in October. Her talk addressed the relationship of a triangular diagram in early travel accounts to the conceptualization of cultural difference between Europe and the Americas. The two-day interdisciplinary symposium included scholars of history, art history, literary criticism, area studies, and architecture and urban planning from around the country. Topics included the relations of mapmaking, map reception, and map use to perception, fantasy, temporality, indigeneity, travel, migration, the slave trade, colonialism, citizenship, costume books, and poetry and drama.
