The Berlyn Arnett and Beryl Ann Henne Award in Art serves a lasting tribute to the memories of Beryl Ann Arnett Henne (1933-2022) and Berlyn Arnett (1909-1981).
Henne grew up in Oklahoma, the daughter of Berlyn Arnett, a hard-working cattle farmer, welder and maker, she described as a Renaissance man. After raising four children with her husband Carl, she worked as a contract specialist for Government Services Administration. She was a proud member of the National Organization for Women and worked with them on the Equal Rights Amendment. The Hennes settled in Virginia, but loved to travel, collecting art and art objects while supporting many local artists in Fredericksurg and when visiting family in Oklahoma.
Daughter Carolyn Henne became an accomplished artist, sharing her expertise and passion with hundreds of students as a professor of art at Virginia Commonwealth University and Florida State University, where she served in numerous leadership roles before retiring in 2022, including associate dean of the College of Fine Arts, chair of the Department of Art, studio art graduate program director and more.
The family of Beryl Ann Henne and Berlyn Arnett established this fund in their honor to outstanding students pursuing a B.A. in Studio Art, in recognition of work exemplifying exceptional achievement.
