College of Fine Arts Undergraduate Programs

The College of Fine Arts at Florida State University offers undergraduate degree programs in Art, Art History, Dance, Interior Architecture and Design, and Theatre. The College also houses the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Facility for Arts Research, the Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography (MANCC) and the Themed Experience Institute. The Department of Art offers the following Undergraduate Degree Programs: Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Studio Art and Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Studio Art. The limited access BFA programs are available to those students already pursuing a BA in Studio Art.

Course selection encompasses history, theory, and practice. Studies may include ceramics, electronic media, design, drawing, installation, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. Each degree program mandates specific entry requirements, a certain sequence of courses, and graduation requirements. All BA and BFA students are required to complete one focus area, though BFA students are encouraged to complete two focus areas.

The Department of Art History offers a BA in Art History where students are broadly educated in the history of art and are introduced to a wide variety of cultures from around the world and throughout history. Students are provided with rigorous training in visual analysis and are encouraged to hone their skills in critical thinking and writing. A degree in Art History fully prepares any student for graduate school or a career in the arts.

The Department of Art History offers a Bachelor of Arts and three Art History minors: Minor in Art HistoryMinor in Medieval Studies and Minor in Museum Studies.

Florida State University is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Dance, offering work leading to the Bachelor of Fine Arts, the Master of Fine Arts, the Master of Arts in Dance (Studio and Related Studies), and the Master of Arts in Dance (American Dance Studies). Performance and choreography are the strong emphases of both the BFA and MFA programs with considerable theoretical coursework also required. BFA students take daily studio classes in ballet and in contemporary dance throughout their enrollment.

The undergraduate degree emphasis is on performance and choreography as well as the theoretical aspects of dance (pedagogical, historic, and aesthetic). Additionally, students select an area of specialization which relates to his or her area of interest, deepens his understanding of dance, and may impact his particular contribution to the field upon graduation.

The Department of Interior Architecture & Design encompasses a CIDA accredited undergraduate curriculum. Students focus on design theory, history, technical skills, as well as studio classes. These classes address residential and commercial spaces such as health care, retail, office environment, hospitality and designs for special populations such as children, elderly and others in need of supportive housing. The curriculum prepares students to work as interior designers in design firms as well as in a number of other design related settings.

The Department of Interior Architecture & Design offers the Bachelor of Science and the Bachelor of Arts degrees in interior design. The Department of Interior Architecture and Design does not offer a minor, although several courses may be taken by non-majors.

The School of Theatre is consistently recognized as one of the finest theatre programs in the nation. Alumni of the School are working in theatre and other related fields throughout the United States and in many foreign countries.

Three degree options for undergraduate students are offered, (BFA-Musical TheatreBFA-Acting and BA-Theatre), and a wide variety of opportunities to explore the many areas within the theatre. The production program provides performance and design/tech work on exciting and imaginative projects directed by faculty, students, guest artists, as well as the opportunity to perform for sold-out houses. The students study and present their work in facilities that include two proscenium theatre's and two flexible laboratory or black-box spaces in addition to studios, shops, and classrooms.
