Based in Vancouver, Emeritus Professor Anthony Morgan and his wife Judith live about as far away from Tallahassee as one can get without leaving the continent. But his days at FSU are never far from his mind.
“FSU was my home for 30+ years. When I look back, there is so much I enjoyed.” Throughout his tenure at FSU, he presented over fifty works including many premieres and pieces he later set on The Anthony Morgan Dance Company in New York. While at FSU, Morgan performed choreography by Doris Humphrey, Lester Horton, and School of Dance founder Nancy Smith Fichter, as well as many graduate and undergraduate works. He began teaching choreography classes in 1992, and especially relished watching his students discover their own choreographic voices.
In Fall 2018, Emeritus Professor Anthony Morgan worked with the School of Dance and FSU Foundation to establish a new Undergraduate Choreography Award, seeded with a generous personal gift. “I realized that, even though I am retired from teaching, I can still help young choreographers further their goals.”
Just a few months after making his initial gift to start the fund, a panel of faculty chose the award’s first recipient, Ashley Pierre-Louis (BFA 2019).
“What a full circle it has been! I remember taking Anthony’s Graham technique classes, and now I have graduated with the FIRST EVER Anthony Morgan Undergraduate Choreography Award! I really do feel like my artistic voice is emerging and I am excited to see where [it] will lead me. I plan to move to ‘the City;’ this scholarship will be a HUGE help in this drastic life change. My dreams seem possible with this support.” -Ashley Pierre-Louis
